Summary

To paraphrase the Patrick Swayze/Jennifer Grey starrer, get ready for some Dirty Driving. The tagline invites us to venture beyond the city streets and head for wilder climes. Like any other rallycross title, there's snow, sludge and splashes along the way, taking in eighteen scenarios.

There are some absolutely wicked flips and spills to be had if you drive recklessly enough, and an interesting 'suicide' mode where you race in the opposite direction to the other cars. But the immediate problem with this specific title is a severe lack of speed thrills. Add to this the fact that the cars sound like someone in the next room, rolling around on an old bed, and handle like a rotweiler on crack, then you get some idea of how frustrating this game can be. What's going on onscreen isn't always easy to determine too, especially in the desert scenario, where bumps and corners hit without warning. There's not an awful lot you can do about it either, as the set-up of whichever car you choose is fixed.

There's a sequel to this title, called Rally Cross 2, strangely enough, and it's much much better than this. So give this one a miss and move up a gear.
