Summary

The boxing game has acquired greater levels of success in recent years, but as software houses compete to gain the most comprehensive and statistically competent licenses, boxing games produced by separate developers are becoming increasingly divided. In Acclaim’s favour, HBO Boxing doesn’t have all boxers currently in the game, but it is the only game to feature superstar boxers, Roy Jones Jr and George Foreman.

Strangely, HBO features new and upcoming boxers, as well as some of the sport’s legends. Playable boxers also include the infamous Marciano and Camacho. When beginning a game, you will have the option to participate in instant matches and tournaments, or develop a brand new character in Career Mode. Those of you looking for an interactive career in boxing will find yourselves climbing the ladder of fame until you become the world’s greatest. A pay per view option gives players the opportunity to watch a whole boxing tournament that is progressively broken down from eight boxers to two finalists. When fighting, the familiar voice of Jim Lampley oversees the match to commentate, giving HBO a realistic feel. There is also a wide range of real American Venues that range from Atlantic City to Las Vegas. Since HBO aims to be showcased as a simulator, bashing random buttons and hoping for victory simply will not work.

HBO Boxing is a surprisingly accurate game that has some unique features. For boxing fans looking for the ultimate collection, this game is a necessity.
