Summary

Art Academy and Pokemon might seem like seem like odd bedfellows at first glance, but it makes a lot of sense for younger Nintendo fans.

The Art Academy series first appeared on Nintendo's small screens back in 2009 with the DS. It offered a virtual art studio with a deep range of art materials carefully created to behave realistically. Paint, pastels and pencils were all in the hands of players thanks to the combination of touch screen and stylus. The series focuses on tutorials that really guide the novice through step-by-step processes to master the techniques they need to produce bigger fine art pieces.

With this Pokemon-themed outing from the series the original Art Academy tutor, Vince, is replaced by his brother Andy. Andy is a famous Pokemon card illustrator and your guide through learning to draw the little guys. The game comprises some 40 main lessons, with varuous smaller lessons scattered between them.

Beyond the tutorials is free paint mode, in which players get access to the full suite of tools, as well as over 100 reference pictures of Pokemon and the option to import your own images using the 3DS camera.

New to the series is a range of materials we haven't seen before. There are markers for producing block colours with clean, sharp edges, airbrushes, and an outline pen that offers a smooth line that can't be coloured over.

There are, of course, numerous Pokemon from across the series to draw, including the likes of Pikachu, Oshawott, Charizard, Torchic, Fletchling, Fennekin and plenty more!
