Summary

More often than not strategy fans tend to fall into two camps - those who enjoy the RPG type games such as Fire Emblem and those who prefer to dig into the larger scale combat of Real-Time Strategy titles such as Starcraft. Developer Grimlore, however, is having none of that with its Spellforce series. As such Spellforce III is a hybrid of role-playing game elements and RTS tropes, with the developer promising to bring the best of both worlds together.

On the RPG side of the equation, players start out by choosing three heroes from a possible 10 and then get into tried and true RPG progression through questing, building skills and abilities and diving in to a deep story with fully-voiced cutscenes.

Full-bodied RTS components are here too, however, with three playable factions (Elves, Orcs, and Humans) and four unit types (archer, swordsmen, spearmen, and cavalry equivalents) to choose from. As well as going into battle you'll need to manage your economy and settlements, making sure everything runs smoothly for the big fights.

Becuase this is a hybrid game, however, you don't need to do quite so much micromanagement as you would in a more run of the mill RTS. You can queue up activities for your minions to be getting on with while you're off questing and the game will keep you informed as to how they're doing.

Sometimes there's more to saving your kingdom than going on a quest, and Spellforce III gives you a proper taste of heroic storytelling AND complex strategy.
