Summary

Total War: Three Kingdoms is involved, chaotic and at times violent on a grand scale.

Generals will defect, important family members will die, courtiers are constantly at each other's throats... If you've watched and enjoyed a certain popular historical fantasy TV show, you might well be salivating right about now. Once upon a time these interpersonal woes wouldn't have concerned you too much - you played as the state you commanded, so you were above such things. Now, however, you play as Liu Bei, Yuan Shao or some other leading light of statecraft and warfare in ancient China. This is a time of heroes.

This is partly due to the fact that the Total War series has, at least for this game, veered away from being as accurate as possible and instead opted for Romance, modelling the world and the action on the fourteenth century novel Romance of the Three Kingdoms, giving it the Chinese equivalent to an Arthurian vibe.

The game is, as ever, broken up into activities such as building towns, recruiting soldiers, declaring war and shifting your armies around the map on one hand. On the other, of course, is the fighting itself. Once you're in a fight the view zooms up so that you can control units in real time. In the mix now, though, are individual heroes who, as well as leading their own retinues of fighters, get in feuds, have rivalries, switch allegiences and generally keep things interesting.

The fate of the Three Kingdoms hangs in the balance, and stopping them from falling promises to be a tricky task!
