Summary

You play as Ash. He loves to sketch and paint, but he's being bullied. The bullies hit him where it really hurts, ripping pages from his sketchbook and scattering them to the winds. When he goes to find them, however, he discovers that some of them have begun to come to life...

This is where you get to the core mechanic of Concrete Genie. Like Penny Crayon (it's OK if you don't remember her), when you draw on a wall your creation will come to life. If you're a terrible artist, don't worry. As you gather up more pages of your notebook you'll be given templates to use so that you don't have to flex your creative muscles too hard. Once you've used a base template, however, you do get to improvise with it. You might draw a starry night then start throwing suns into the mix.

You can also, drawing from a menu of options, create your own genie to be your companion and help you out along the way.

You're probably going to need them, because although this is a game about fun and creativity, you've also got a job to do. A dark entity is taking over the town where you live and now that you have these magic powers it falls to you to combat it, restoring life to the place you live with your drawings. That's going to involve some puzzle-solving, a bit of platforming and, later in the game, dealing with some dark genies. You won't be fighting them so much as trying to tame and help them, though. Think of them as wounded wild animals in need of some (potentially tough) love and a bit of corralling. The mechanics work a lot like combat, but for once you're not trying to hurt the thing that you're facing but to help it, changing the whole feel of the encounter.
