Summary

One of the core promises of video games is to make you feel powerful, slick and in complete command of your (virtual) environment. Meanwhile, action films like John Wick offer the same feeling by proxy. Superhot VR is a loooooong way from being the first game to try to bring these two things together, but it's certainly one of the smartest and most intriguing.

For starters, this PlayStation 4 release has the huge advantage of virtual reality. You're immersed in the game, so when you pull off an awesome move you really feel it. But Superhot isn't the first shooter to offer VR, either.

What really sets it apart is the way it offers you the chance to match the unspoken superpower of gunfighters like the aforementioned Wick - they always seem to have a supernatural knowledge of what they should do next. While Superhot Team can't level up your brain, what it does is slow the movement of your enemies right down whenever you're still. If you don't move you can take in the scene and decide what to do next. The moment you raise your hand to aim or throw a punch, though, those bad guys will speed right up again, so you'd best know what you're about to do. Similarly, the cool abstract art style that has enemies show up bright red against a white background means that you'll be in no doubt as to where you should aim.

Don't think you're in for an easy time, though. If you take a single hit you're a goner, just like your nominally-human action heroes.
