Summary

Asterix Mega Madness for the PlayStation is one of the best party games to be released for the platform in a long time. Using the popular characters from the Gaul fighting comic books, Asterix Mega Madness is a collection of mini-games that are played one after another. If you are quick and smart enough, you just might be able to beat that elusive high score.

For example, the first game puts you in charge of a catapult on the frontlines, where you must fire your projectile weapon at three different targets. You must determine the correct angle and distance while avoiding the enemy shots. The time limit is strict, so if you want a good score you will have to fire fast.

Another game is an eating competition. The four of you are sat at a table as food comes streaming down, when it reaches you, you are presented with joystick movements that must be copied as fast as possible. To add an element of strategy to the game, certain meals are worth more than others are. You can swipe these off your competitors, but watch out for them pulling the same tricks on you.

Visually, the game is not the most spectacular development for the ageing PlayStation. Graphics are simple, with a reasonably low level of detail that is reminiscent to those seen in the Asterix animated series. The game has been optimised to suit the game’s style, and not to demonstrate the abilities of the hardware it runs on.

Overall, Asterix Mega Madness is full of small fun games that will keep you and your friend entertained. Especially, if you constantly beat each other’s top scores. Who will be the best?
