I wonder where Miyamoto got this information? Surely doing surveys like this is the definitive way to find out the answer; hopefully he hasn't been making assumptions as to what games people like :P

Miyamoto has a disproportionate amount of influence on the decisions Nintendo makes as a company, and so do shareholders. I am certain that in the eyes of Miyamoto and shareholders, people vote for the games they like using their money, not by posting on internet forums. New Super Mario Bros. titles continue to sell very well across the globe, so Miyamoto believes that people aren't tired of the franchise -- even while many gamers and critics believe it has gone stale. Likewise, although F-Zero GX continues to earn well-deserved praise, it performed very poorly in sales -- hence why Miyamoto is surprised that anyone wants a new F-Zero title. He interprets sales as a barometer of interest in a given game or franchise.
