Toshinden broke no new ground when it came out as one of the first bunch of Playstation Releases. What it did had been done already by Virtua Fighter on the Saturn.
But Toshinden was silky smooth, gloriously playable and fabulous looking. The characters were varied and interesting. Some hardcore gamers preferred Tekken, but Toshinden had many fans, and was a massive success. The floating 'platforms' battle arena added the new slant, as it was possible to defeat an opponent by knocking them over the edge, without depleting all their energy. This idea was later used by many games including Soul Blade.
