Summary
Don't be fooled by the title. Best of the Best: Championship Karate has nothing to do with karate, but is actually a kick boxing game. You choose the name and physical appearance of your character, before embarking on your quest to become the world champion.
Your character has an arsenal of 55 different moves to choose from, but only five can be used in any one bout. Before each fight you can train your kick boxer at a gym to make sure he is in peak condition. To become world champion, it is necessary to alternate between training and fights, as training improves your character's overall attributes.
Best of the Best: Championship Karate is very addictive once you get into the swing of it. The gameplay is fast, fluid and enjoyable. The rival kick boxers are more than a match for even the most experienced Beat'Em Up fan and offer plenty of longevity. Graphically, Best of the Best: Championship Karate is not too great and hasn't got a patch on the SNES version. Once you get used to the game, the controls are straightforward enough, but can be slightly unresponsive. Also, it is very easy to perform a kick when you actually mean to punch your opponent. Like other NES games of this genre there is little or no music, with the sound effects being no more than a bleeping noise.
