Summary

3DO’s successful Heroes of Might and Magic series has broadened its horizons and is making its way from PC to Dreamcast. Turn-based role-playing games never looked and played so well. Prepare to enter the next world of pure fantasy.

Published by Ubi Soft, Shadow of Death combines traditional PC role-playing games with those seen on consoles. The environments you wander through are of the 2D scrolling variety, but are highly detailed. With each day that passes you are allocated a certain number of moves on the playing area. The turn-based battles featured in the game do not occur as random battles, but with enemies you meet along the way. Some battles can be avoided by taking certain paths, but in the long run it’s better to fight them, gain experience, and take away items the enemy may have. What’s more, some of the battles can be drawn out, so if you’re confident of victory you can set the battle to automatic. New team members can be also recruited to replace fallen members, but at a cost. Fighters can be acquired in most major cities, helping you in your quest.

As long you’re resourceful, you shouldn’t have too much trouble defeating any opposition that comes your way. But the story of the game is so engrossing that you can’t help but play it.
