Summary

Some people may question the validity of releasing a 2D side scrolling shooter on the PlayStation 2, a console that is capable of such amazing graphics. Allow us to explain. Gradius is seated along side the absolute elite in the arcade hall of fame. Its heritage dates back over fifteen years. Its parentage includes Salamander, Nemesis and Parodius. If these titles mean nothing to you, you have been spending your loose change in wiser ways than pumping it into wildly addictive arcade machines.

In time for release of PlayStation 2 Konami have offered up Gradius 3 and 4 together in one pack. Versions 3 and 4 are widely accepted as being the pinnacle of shooters, their only rival coming in the form of the mythical Blazing Star from SNK.

Both titles look absolutely amazing running on their latest platform, with a myriad of beautifully evolving sprites filling the screen with no slow down or corruption. The ships have the brilliant feature of being fully customisable, allowing the player to define everything from the speed gain of a power-up to the width and strength of the laser. Gradius 3 and 4 is a must buy for any PlayStation 2 owning true arcade gamer.
