Virtual Pool makes a welcome return to the PC in this third incarnation of the popular series. Smoky pool halls and pitchers of beer can become a distant memory if you so wish. Pool can be a complicated game, but fun but its always fun to play, and theres no better place to practice your PC shots and angles then with Virtual Pool 3.
The most impressive features in this game are graphics and physics. This game looks lush and plays really smoothly. The physics have been reworked and are more true to life than ever. The background music (poodle rockin' heavy metal and lame-o lounge jazz) will appeal to a select few, but overall the music level is best left turned down.
The computer plays a good game of pool and is a more than able opponent. The aim of the single player game is to work your way up through the leagues to prove yourself as the best in the land. You play people for money and your winnings can be used to unlock new locations and buy new equipment. Jeanette Lee officially endorses Virtual Pool 3 and if you are good enough, you win a chance to play against her, albeit in a virtual sense.
Another feature of Virtual Pool 3 is its multi-player mode. If you have an Internet connection you will probably be able to find someone to play against anytime you like, and the fact that players take turns to make their shots means there are no lag problems usually associated with Internet gaming. Virtual Pool 3 comes with Gamespy Arcade built in, so finding a game or joining a competition is no problem at all.
If you are a newcomer to the world of Pool, there are several tutorial videos included on the CD that can help you learn the basics. Paying attention to these videos and putting what you learn into practice will help you become a PC pro in no time.
Virtual Pool 3 is a hugely enjoyable simulation of a great game, with multiple variations of the rules, including snooker. VP3 is a polished package and is definitely worth chalking your cue for.
