Summary

There are many games released these days that simply do not get the attention they deserve. However, when a Rareware logo can be seen on the package of a game, any hardcore player will stand up and take notice. Although from Disney Interactive, Mickey’s Speedway USA is in fact, a game developed by Rare. With titles like Diddy Kong Racing, Donkey Kong 64 and Banjo-Kazooie in their portfolio, there will be certain expectations from the game playing public. Anyone who has had the pleasure to play a Rare game will know them for their outstanding game structure and devious gameplay. Mickey’s Speedway USA looks set to pose an equally difficult challenge.

Set in the United States of America, you will travel across many of the country’s 57 states in as many as twenty different courses. The full cast of Disney are present, including Mickey, Donald Duck, and Goofy, among others. As a similar game to Nintendo classic, Mario Kart, it is not surprising that there are some truly nasty computer controlled opponents with amazing AI. Also, there are a number power-ups that can be collected along the way, both offensive and defensive, to counter your opposition’s attacks. However, Speedway USA, like Mario Kart, shines through with its multi-player options. 4-player simultaneous action has always been one of the Nintendo 64’s strong points, and Speedway USA emphasises this well.

Mickey’s Speedway USA doesn’t have the polished feel that comes with most Rare games, but the gameplay is as great as can be expected. Consider this one for Christmas, it’s well worth it.
