Summary

There are strange forces at work. Forces which will try their best to warp your fragile little mind. Forces which are undoubtedly present in Vib Ribbon, THE most bizarre PlayStation title your author has ever come across. Truly, unless you’ve been eating too much cheese and custard just before bedtime, there’s very little chance that you have seen anything like this before.

The star of the show is Vibri, a rabbit with an appetite for moving to music. The tunes that are on the PSX disc itself are the kind that could have come from any number of ‘early hours Japanese animation on Channel Four’ programmes. They provide a few changes in tempo, and even more laughs, as you try to guide Vibri through the loops and troughs which appear on the thin white line. Controlling Vibri is simple, as there are only four buttons to press throughout the game. However, as the music goes on, combinations of obstacles will come at you, thus combinations of buttons need to be pressed. It sounds simple, but believe me, it takes a lot of concentration to prevent Vibri from clashing with the obstacles, taking the reverse route down the evolutionary scale, and turning into a worm. Alternatively, keep Vibri jumping and somersaulting, and he’ll be transformed into a winged cherub.

At first glance, Vib Ribbon looks so sparse it’s untrue. But once you get the controller in your hand, and your own choice of music in the console (some bangin’ techno drives Vibri wild), it’s very addictive, and a huge amount of fun. Shame it’s only a single-player game, though.
