Summary

EA’s reputation as a video games developer and publisher is a strong one. Now split into two divisions, EA Sports and EA Games, the company seems unstoppable. While known for many games developments across many genres, the company is undoubtedly best known for sports titles, but more specifically, sports sequels and updates. Continuing the trend, EA has now released the popular golf simulator Tiger Woods PGA Golf 2001 for PlayStation 2.

As EA’s first golf simulator on the platform, this particular update is superior in more ways than one. All golfers and courses are now rendered to scale in a full 3D world with unprecedented detail. EA has shown great attention to detail here, putting the PlayStation 2 capabilities to good use. But most importantly, Tiger Woods 2001 has accurate game mechanics and ball physics, guaranteeing its reputation as a simulator to be reckoned with.

The PlayStation 2 instalment of the series features an exclusive license of the Pebble Beach course, as well as SpyGlass Hill and Poppy Hills. Also, players including Tiger Woods, Justin Leonard and Brad Faxon participate in polygonal form as fully playable characters. While previous versions of the game were lacking a decent ball lie detection system, this PS2 version incorporates the third dimension into the same feature, making it easy to determine how well positioned your ball is.

Six competitive modes of play allow for a variety of customisable game options. Game modes include Tour, Skins and Match Play, where you can test your skills alongside the rest of the field.

Tiger Woods 2001 is by far the most comprehensive in the series, with many great features that make the game experience a diverse one. A superb simulator.
