Summary

The party game has come a long way in recent years, particularly with the recent population increase of millions of casual gamers. Development teams all over the world, including reputable software houses such as Nintendo are now catering for such an audience. Sega’s in-house team is now following suit with the release of Sonic Shuffle, exclusive to Dreamcast.

The motivation behind Sonic Shuffle entails a simple story line that explains the necessity to go around numerous worlds, collecting pieces of a shattered precious jewel. Uncannily similar to Nintendo’s Mario Party series, a game of Sonic Shuffle begins on a fantasy board game, in which players must battle to reach the distant jewels. Board game spots have varying functions, whereby some will act as safety zones, and others prompt a mini game in which all contenders will participate. The sub-games are diverse, and provide the essential party essence of the game. Throughout the game you will come across a host of well-known characters from the Sonic universe, including Knuckles and the evil Robotnik. There are two modes of play that consist of Story and Versus, but it is the multi-player option that will reveal the true potential of Sonic Shuffle. While the appeal of the game can be quite restricted in single player, challenging a human opponent provides much more excitement and unpredictability to the game.

Sonic Shuffle is an astonishingly simple game, but at the same time it offers a tremendous challenge. It’s appealing, easy to learn, but challenging to master, and as a complete game it performs well.
