Summary

Disappointed with the non-appearance of Metropolis Street Racer for PS2? Can’t wait for Project Gotham on the Xbox? Supercar Street Challenge is here to pacify you. The game features some of the most exotic high-performance vehicles you’ve (n)ever heard of, such as the Pagani Zonda C12 and Fioravanti F100 (it's a Ferrari!) and far-flung street courses in locations such as Los Angeles, Munich, Paris, London and Rome. Supercar Street Challenge has an ‘arcade-y’ feel to it, which is fair enough in Arcade Mode. However, the style of gameplay remains distinctly ‘arcade-y’ in Championship Mode: cars bounce around the scenery and each other, but this time around, real-time car damage is present, and that can be detrimental to your performance, so keep an eye out for the shortcuts if you want to keep up with the pack.

Supercar Street Challenge includes a design studio where players can create their own high-speed racer. Choose the shape of your car, its chassis type, engine size, accessories and colour scheme, and if you’re not totally happy with its performance, go for a selection of upgrades. Winning races is the key to making your car go faster. It’s also the way to open up new tracks in new cities. Too many defeats, and that means a series of downgrades, whether you’re driving something you’ve created yourself or an existing vehicle.

Supercar Street Challenge may not completely immerse you in a Gran Turismo-style experience, or offer the alluring lunacy of Burnout’s gameplay. It falls somewhere between the two. With its lush looks, extraordinarily fast cars, and some hairy race manoeuvres courtesy of some stunning motors, Supercar Street Challenge should get anybody’s motor running. Vroom vroom!
