Summary
Squaresoft, the world famous RPG creators have been diversifying their development operations lately. Driving Emotion Type S was their first venture in the driving game genre and now they have a baseball game under their belts. Introducing Gekikuhkan Pro Baseball for the PlayStation 2.
Gekikuhkan Pro Baseball is a very playable baseball simulator that features all of the Japanese professional teams. Squaresoft has used the latest state of the art motion capture techniques to give the players realistic movement. Using the power of the PlayStation 2, Gekikuhkan Pro Baseball looks startling: almost as good as the real thing. The only downside is the crowd, which looks like it is made up of cardboard cut-outs. But when you see how good the players look, the crowd is easily forgotten.
The aim of the game is simple, the team with the most points at the end of the game wins. A game of baseball consists of nine innings with each team batting once per innings. The pitcher must throw the ball within the strike zone three times without the batter striking it to get that player out. If the batter swings and misses that is considered a strike as well and three strikes means you’re ‘outta’ there. If four balls land outside the strike zone without the batter swinging for them, the batter automatically earns a walk and that means a free trip to first base. If a player makes it all the way to home base he earns a run. A homerun is accomplished by knocking the ball out of the park so that no-one on the other team stands any chance of catching it.
Gekikuhkan Pro Baseball is a great two-player game: matches can be very tense and exciting. Putting swerve on your pitches to fool your opponent into swinging can be highly amusing. Likewise, scoring a grand slam homerun ( a homerun with three people on base ) in the bottom of the ninth when you are trailing by three points is one of the best videogame feelings ever.
