Summary

Many people would argue that a racing game is a racing game, end of story. But games like Gran Turismo and Mario Kart have proved that the racing genre is as diverse as the developers’ imagination. Tooncar from Akaei, while not a simulator of any kind, is eager to show just how much fun racing with tactics can be.

Created in a completely original Toon world, players are able to assume the role of any of 14 unique Toons, including Guisseppe the Gangster, Raj the levitating Sikh and Nigashi the sumo.

Once chosen, your preferred character will be pitted against a number of computer controlled racers, equally eager to win their race. It is here that the inclusion of weapons adds the tactical element of the game. Using whatever means necessary, your ultimate goal is to be the first to reach the chequered flag. Each craft is made weapon-capable by the pick-ups that can be collected around any of Tooncar’s varied racecourses. Ranging from homing missiles to speed boosts, players must take charge of the weapons. You can choose to use weapons early to get the advantage, or hold on until seconds before the finish line, but you should be aware of some nasty AI routines from the opposition.

The game can be played in a number of modes such as single player and multi-player, but the option to play over LAN is the most intriguing and offers the best gameplay Tooncar has to offer.

In its simplest terms, Tooncar is Mario Kart 64 for PC. No complaints there, then.
