Summary
The sequel to the award winning turn-based strategy game, Age of Wonders, this title has been subject to a graphical overhaul, updated gameplay and improved AI, providing more challenging opponents.
Awakened to become part of an immortal group of wizards – the Circle of Evermore – the player is given the task of restoring balance to a world on the brink of collapse. Mastering the magical forces of creation is required, as is dealing with the deities who govern them. The player must establish a fantasy empire and confront other wizards in a struggle for world domination.
Age of Wonders 2 blends elements of strategy, role-playing and adventure, with the objectives being to maintain heroes, towns, armies, resources and magic in order to defeat opponents.
Specialising in one of seven spheres of magic, including Earth, Fire, Life and Death, the player reigns supreme over one of 12 distinct races, enlisting the aid of more than 30 loyal champions. With assistance from various deities, enemy cities can be defeated with a combination of tactical guile and magic. At the same time, the player can guide the growth of their own city, building such things as defences, mystical temples and army training grounds.
AOW2 also features a multiplayer option that supports LAN or Internet. Up to eight players can battle it out with options including Play by E-mail, Hot Seat and a Simultaneous-Turn System, which allows all players to move at the same time.
Enhancements on the prequel include new spells, skills and combat rules, which combine to speed up battles. There’s also an enhanced scenario editor, which allows the player to design his or her own scenarios, heroes, items and wizards. On top of this, there’s also a random map generator, allowing for a never-ending supply of new worlds.
Age of Wonders 2 is an extremely comprehensive RTS game, offering hours of play, a deep story line and an altogether immersive experience.
