Summary

Sonic is back once again and this time he’s madder, badder and faster than ever before. The original Sonic Adventure showed that the Dreamcast could display, high-resolution graphics at 60 frames a second really, really fast. Perfect for a Sonic game. Things have certainly moved on since the first game as Sonic Team has learned how to really push the Sega hardware.

Dr. Robotnik is up to his usual evil tricks again and it is your responsibility to put an end to his ways once and for all. Sonic has learned a few new tricks for his second outing, he can now grind along suitable surfaces and can somersault like a gymnast. In the first level you snowboard down the streets, take out the enemies, run down the side of a skyscraper and run towards the screen while trying to avoid an out of control 18-wheeler, sweet.

The graphics in Sonic 2 are unbelievably good. The Dreamcast’s use of hardware texture compression comes into play and the diversity and colours in a level bring it to life. Sonic is once again fast, smooth and beautiful. Levels are full of extra details like buildings and structures and these do not affect the speed of the game or the sensation of speed whatsoever.

There are several different characters that all add a different slant to the gameplay. Sonic is fast, Tales has more puzzles to solve and Knuckles has to find hidden gems. Completing Sonic 2 will take some time but it is likely that you will enjoy every single minute of it. A stunning title for the Dreamcast.
