Summary

Not content with building blocks and plastic buckets, Lego took it upon themselves to create an interactive division and infiltrate the video games industry. Ever since, Lego Media has continued to grow, developing Lego themed games across most current platforms, not least GameBoy Color. The Lego Island sequel, cleverly titled Lego Island 2 is set to succeed its predecessor in many more ways than numeric.

Produced in conjunction with master GameBoy developers Crawfish Interactive, Lego Island 2 looks well and runs incredibly smoothly. While expectedly in 2D format, Lego Island 2 boasts a variety of colourful environments and great gameplay mechanics, making it instantly appealing to its targeted audience. Lego Island 2 is essentially one big game of hide and seek. In this scenario, the evil Brickster has broken out of jail and is causing havoc in Legoland. After accidentally bumping into him while delivering a pizza, you find yourself embarking upon this strange mission. However, Brickster’s henchmen are on the loose, eager to halt your progress permanently. Not to worry though, since your pizza-throwing skills should help you overcome most obstacles. In addition, a mini trading card game has been introduced as a side-quest to entice players further into the game. Here, your aim is to collect a complete selection of the game’s 32 character-faced cards. While most of these are obtainable through exploration, others, usually the rare ones, must often be traded with cards of your own. It’s quite addictive.

The combination of two such diverse methods of gameplay makes Lego Island 2 very approachable, and it’s this feature that ultimately makes it a great game.
