Summary

The quest for originality within the industry is a tough challenge for any developer. Whether the focus is on gameplay or the story, ideas are running dry. And with the 3D generation now clearly established, software houses are looking to put new angles on the visual aspects of the game. One of the latest graphical features to appear on next generation platforms is cell rendering. It is a technique that is used to simulate an enhanced animated environment similar to the likes on Fender Bender 500 and Scooby Doo. Acclaim’s Fur Fighter games have demonstrated this use in graphics brilliantly, while at the same time incorporating a bizarre but engrossing story. Now released on PlayStation 2, Viggo’s Revenge is by far the most accomplished Fur Fighters game to date.

After being thrown out of the Fur Fighter village, bad guy Viggo has returned in search of revenge. This time he has kidnapped the Fur Fighter families and it’s up to Roofus and the rest of the super-hero team to set things straight.

Upon first impressions, Fur Fighters plays just like a first-person shooter, but with one contradictory difference – it is played in the third person. On the negative side, using a control pad to manoeuvre around such a game can prove extremely awkward. But it will eventually become second nature as long as you persist. Typically, there are many weapons, health and armour power ups that increase the strategy of the game. Ironically, the environments of the game are bright and colourful, and not at all reminiscent of the Quake series. But don’t let this fool you, things can get quite violent at times.

Overall, Viggo’s Revenge is little more than a sequel, but it’s a great one at that.
