Summary

Puzzle games and portable consoles are just made for each other. The latest game to waste your time with is Denki Blocks for the Game Boy Advance. Like most puzzle games, the concept behind Denki Blocks is devilishly simple and that makes it accessible to all audiences. Join the coloured blocks together and move them into the correct shape to complete a level. Ingenious and addictive, watch out for Denki Blocks.

The idea is to solve the puzzles in the fewest number of moves possible. You can only move the coloured blocks, ‘the gumblocks’, around the playing area. This seems simple at first, but navigating the gumblocks around the immovable blocks soon becomes tricky. After a couple of attempts, the solutions present themselves, but trying to figure out the most efficient strategy requires high levels of brainpower.

In the later levels, the clock plays an increasingly important part. Racing against the clock adds stress to the equation, especially when there is only one correct way of completing a level and you realise you went slightly wrong a few moves back. You can also race the computer in a game of skill to see who can create the most shapes in the quickest time.

Denki Blocks can also boast ‘ECTS Game of the Show award’ for 2001. It goes to show that true gameplay is more rewarding than fancy graphics and technical marvellous-ness. Denki Blocks is easy to pick up and hard to put down, and a must have for the puzzle fan.
