Summary

Following the success of the hit movie, X-Men, there has been a recent smattering of games based upon the infamous Marvel characters. Now set for Game Boy Advance, X-Men: Reign of Apocalypse promises to be the best scrolling beat-em-up yet for the platform.

Since this game is not a one-on-one beat-em-up, X-Men: Reign of Apocalypse’s side-scrolling qualities bear striking similarities towards many retro classics such as Double Dragon and Streets of Rage.

Here, players have a variety of classic heroes to choose to play as in their adventure, including the legendary Cyclops, Storm, Wolverine and Rogue. Naturally, each of them have their own completely unique abilities, allowing several different game styles to be experienced.

Gameplay has been simplified to make in-game action less frustrating. Players can execute spectacular special moves with relative ease, but as a consequence, the enemies’ fighting strategies are a little more challenging. Juggle attacks are a nice touch. The gameplay is carefully balanced, as players can collect experience points at the end of each stage for their overall performance. These points can then be used to increase the statistics of your character. But as you become more powerful, so do your foes.

If you play carefully and not carelessly X-Men: Reign of Apocalypse should prove a thoroughly enjoyable handheld experience.
