Summary
Among the best developers of flight simulation games, Microsoft has demonstrated its ability to create an engrossing shoot-em-up over and over with its Combat Flight Simulator series. And the company is now expanding its portfolio, bringing Crimson Skies to home console.
As with many combat adventure games, Crimson Skies has players assuming control of a lead character with a motive for revenge. In this case, players become the legendary Nathan Zachary as they fight through 1930's America to hunt down the murderers of his best friend. You really can’t blame the guy, and it makes for a great game of airborne combat.
As a game, Crimson Skies focuses on low altitude combat in which the player’s best weapon is the mountainous environment. They provide cover against some oncoming fire, but more importantly can be used as a means of attack. Players are able to trigger landslides, collapse water towers and bridges and fly through danger zones to lure enemy craft to their doom.
There are ten warplanes to pilot, each armed to the teeth with napalm missiles, grapples and sandstorm cannons, and each of them are easily controlled for accessibility. Crimson Skies isn’t so much about flying, it’s about fighting.
In addition to the single-player experience, Microsoft has also included a split-screen multi-player option in which up to four players can take to the skies as a squadron to defeat both human and AI opponents. And it works extremely well on Xbox Live too, providing excellent competitive gameplay.
For a combat flight game, Crimson Skies is remarkably easy to pick up. It’s full of challenging gameplay and comes with some great surprises and hidden bonuses.
