Summary

There have been many boxing games developed for PlayStation in recent years, and while this may be partially due to a new mainstream audience of casual gamers, it can’t be denied that many of these games are a lot of fun to play. The Victory Boxing series has always been relatively popular and has gone on to sell several hundred thousand copies. Victory Boxing Contender from Virgin is one of developer Victor’s more successful outings in the genre.

Graphically, Victory Boxing Contender is the most accomplished of the bunch, featuring vast and varied textures, believable skin colouring and some accurately designed boxing rings and crowds.

On the gameplay side of things, Victory Boxing Contender has been carefully designed. Bashing random buttons no longer has a positive effect. It slows your boxer down and prevents the player from executing any kind of useful attack move. The correct strategy for this game is to combine several well-timed button combinations to launch an onslaught of nasty attacks that will hopefully KO your opponent. The same principle applies for defence strategies.

There are several standard gameplay modes, such as Championship and Quick Match. But there is also a Gym Mode that allows players to practice their technique as well as build the physique of the chosen character. Players can also improve various statistics and attributes of their preferred character.

A comprehensive game then, we’re sure you will agree. It’s highly challenging, highly playable and thoroughly enjoyable.
