The incredible Tony Hawk Pro Skater series is returning to the Game Boy Color in this second sequel to grace Nintendos portable platform. This is a skateboarding game that is so good that it even appeals to non-fans of the genre. Its all about playability in this game, and Neversoft has managed an outstanding conversion with this title.
The gameplay is objective-based. In each stage there are several tasks for the player to complete. These are similar to the full-sized versions, and usually include finding objects and reaching set score targets. On each level there is a hidden tape that is usually tucked away in a cunning location. Reaching these objectives earns cash that can be used to improve your skaters stats, buy new tricks and specials, and even buy new decks. Most importantly, having cash will unlock new levels and competition invites.
The competition runs take place over three heats. Each one minute run is scored by the judges and the score of your best two attempts is averaged out. If you score the highest you are duly rewarded with a gold medal and three of these beauties will win you the honour of being the best skater around.
The graphics are more than adequate, especially considering how old the Game Boy hardware is. The audio is acceptable, but when did you ever really hear quality sound coming from your Game Boy? Overall, this is a great conversion and makes good use of the limited capabilities of the platform. Theres plenty of enjoyment here to justify the asking price.
