Summary

The surfing game, although a rarely touched upon genre, is one that, if perceived and developed carefully, can show itself to be one of the most compelling game types available. Sunny Garcia’s Surfing demonstrates this .

During the 1,000 year period after a catastrophic seismic event occurred near Hawaii, a new island formed that was to be home to the most volatile weather conditions in the world. This awe-inspiring fictional location drew surfers in by the thousands. The island is now considered the pinnacle of surfing environments.

If you think of Sunny Garcia’s Surfing as somewhat similar Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater, but on water, you wouldn’t be far off the mark. Players can participate in the cold waters 300km off the coast of Hawaii with eight O’Neill surfing champions. Six unique ‘types’ or ‘makes’ of surfboard and 10 beaches with varying tide and wave characteristics help to enhance the game’s replayability, and it works very well.

But the fun part of Sunny Garcia’s Surfing is learning how to execute the game’s 50+ special tricks. Individually, they’re pretty simple: you simply combine several directional movements and button presses. But pulling them off on unpredictable wave formations is significantly trickier, and joining them together to form a high-scoring combination is sometimes just plain difficult. But it’s compulsive. As frustrating as it is, you can’t help but give it another go, and that’s the sign of a good game.

Add obstacles such as and sharks and jagged reefs, secret stages and multi-player competitions, and you’ve got one enjoyably challenging game.
