Summary

As the imminent release of the much-anticipated Colin McRae 3 is set to re establish the Scottish Rally supremo's name within the gaming world, then so too should this little number. Ladies and gentlemen, please welcome Colin McRae Rally 2.0 on the Game Boy Advance.

Shedding the top-down, scrolling perspective of its Game Boy Colour predecessor in favour of a Mode 7-style, pseudo 3D viewpoint, CMR2 looks every bit the part as you broadside round the hairpins. The fact that developer Spellbound has not gone for the full 3D visuals of, say, V-Rally 3 is in no way a bad point, as the wonderful physics more than make up for any flat landscapes.

In keeping with the comprehensiveness of its big brothers on the PC and Playstation, CMR2 on the GBA is crammed with eight cars and over 36 international courses. The premise is the same: take our Colin and compete to become the champion of the World Rally Circuit. There are 16 different types of terrain to master, as well as a full range of realistic weather conditions. Drivers of all skill levels need to balance the capabilities of their cars to the situation at hand in order to win races and build the ultimate rally car.

As well as your standard Rally mode, the game also comes complete with an Arcade option, which offers Championship, Single Race and Time Trial modes. A welcome change from the typical rally environment, Arcade mode offers head-to-head with three opponents and makes for a more quickfire, simplistic approach.

There's a great deal to be said for this game. Like other versions of Colin McRae, it feels just right once you get used to it. It can be quite tricky to get the hang of, but once it clicks, you really get immersed in the action, which is great when you're able to watch yourself successfully thrashing round the courses in the replays.

Add the fact that it comes with a four player link-up mode from just the one (yes one!) cartridge and you've got yourself possibly the best rally game to grace the chipset of Nintendo's Game Boy Advance.
