Summary

Not-so-Serious Sam has entertained FPS fans for several years now and although it took a while, Take 2 has finally released a Gold Edition pack. Yum yum!

In typical FPS fashion, you begin the early stages of the original Serious Sam with only a weak pistol in a seemingly sparse environment. Inevitably, you’ll eventually be confronted by hordes of monsters that range from Reeban Electrofish to Sirian Werebulls. Valuable information can be gained through the destruction of these creatures and you will often be rewarded with a currency called FC. Even when playing the easiest of the game’s five difficulty settings, Serious Sam poses an enormous challenge that only becomes harder as you progress.

This is, without a doubt, a game that is aimed towards an adult audience of FPS players. Serious Sam offers a unique playing experience that’s often funny, always challenging, and consistently puzzling. And its successor is even better.

At the end of the first game, Sam boarded a Syrian spaceship and set off to destroy the great evil Mental. Shortly after take-off, he tumbled back to Earth, deep into the heart of the South American Mountains, and into the clutches of Mental’s experienced destructive fighters. Sam must do everything in his power to defeat the hordes of alien scumbags and put a stop to Mental’s evil plans.

Gameplay-wise, Second Encounter delivers. In fact it kindly offers four-player split screen Deathmatch possibilities, perfect for when you don’t have your home LAN set up. Alternatively, players can compete in up to 16-player Deathmatches over the Internet or local access network, with six game modes to choose from. Also included is the acclaimed 'Serious Warped Deathmatch', created by A Few Screws Loose, one of the better Deathmatch experiences currently available.

There’s something raw and entertaining about Serious Sam games, and when the two of them are combined in this fashion, the end result is a comprehensive blend of pure first-person action.
