Summary

What’s rather obvious about this title is that it’ is quite heavily inspired by Pokemon. Claiming to be a blend of a traditional RPG and Nintendo’s top-selling monster battle game, Dokapon sees the player hunt and collect monsters before battling them in turn-based fights.

The player takes on the role of Hero, a young boy living in Poponga, a city on Dokkano Island. Having just reached the ripe old age of 11, Hero is now old enough to take the Adventurer Exam – a license that grants the owner the chance to search ruins and dungeons in pursuit of a unique ore called Diaramond.

The overall goal in Dokapon is to achieve a triple-A rank as an adventurer. After gaining the prestigious adventurer license to begin with, players subsequently go on to carry out missions given by the All Adventurers Association (3A).

The actual combat in Dokapon is a turn-based system which uses the familiar ‘Paper, Scissors, Stone’ game. Placers associate certain skills to each of these elements, becoming effective in the event of a win. Featuring defining parameters such as Experience, Attack, Defence and Speed, Hero also manages an inventory of weapons and shields. Experience points for these as well as for the character are built up following a victory.

A multiplayer game is available, via the Game Boy Link cable, adding even more longevity to what is already a deep and time-consuming game. With loads of missions, monsters and items, Dokapon will last you quite a while.
