Summary

A direct sequel to the 2000 PlayStation original, Sammy's PS2 update to one of the most cinematic action RPGs since Final Fantasy abandons pre-rendered environments in favour of full 3D splendour. Yes, the saga continues in Galerians: Ash.

Six years have passed since the megalomaniacal mother computer Dorothy launched her plan to create an artificial race of Galerians over whom she would rule, and six years have passed since rogue Galerian Rion sacrificed himself to save the human race. But the conflict is far from over and dying super-computer Dorothy has launched a catastrophic program with potentially devastating consequences.

Presented on a DVD filled to the brim, Galerians: Ash, like its immediate predecessor, focuses very much on cinematic cut-scenes and narrative to tell the story. There is around one hour of video footage alone.

But let's not forget this is still a video game and a role-playing game, if a strange one. You begin your adventure accompanied by a single female and no weapons, and only minutes into the game you are assaulted by a group of shadow-like zombies bent on causing you harm. It is now that you find yourself armed with a series of capsules that can be used for offensive attacks. These capsules allow you to create several varieties of 'forces', which deal damage to oncoming enemies. Simply press and hold the button to charge and release to unleash your new-found skill. The longer you charge, the more deadly your attack will be. But do remember your supplies are expendable and need to be kept topped up.

And that's basically all there is to it. Defeat a few bad guys, the odd boss, and then watch a compelling cut-scene. It's simple role-playing fun and a worthy sequel to a great game.
