Summary

As the title suggests, it's back to the field. The latest instalment of the historical RTS series is upon us, so load up your musket, sharpen your dagger, mount your horse and then canter into your bedroom and boot up your PC. You don't actually need to do all that other stuff but it helps you get in the mood. Just make sure your curtains are closed or the neighbours will think you're mad.

Back to War basically offers new missions, countries, units, and improved AI to the long-running Cossacks brand. All the gameplay features of Cossacks: European Wars and Cossacks: The Art of War are wrapped up in a complete package for all current and future Cossacks fans, packed with 100 captivating missions between the 16th and 18th centuries. In addition, two new nations, Switzerland and Hungary, which waged war in the late Middle Ages and essentially influenced the development of European military strategies, are included.

An important element of Cossacks is the resource management. It is important to maintain your economy as well as your troops. There are six main resources: food, wood, stone, gold, iron and coal. All game units consume resources. For example, artillery and handgun shots use iron and coal. If you expand your army too fast and cannot feed it or maintain it, there is bound to be a riot. The price of goods in the game is balanced to a supply and demand economy.

Cossacks in general is a game that makes you think and also tests your leadership abilities to the max. Good tactics combined with a long-term strategy is essential for victory, which in turn rewards the player with booze. 'What's that?' we hear you say. The bit about booze? Oh yes, the inaugural monthly champion of the online ranking system wins a crate of finest Russian Vodka. We'll drink to that.
