Summary

Robin Hood, eh? What a guy. Stealing from the rich, giving to the poor and all that. We're all familiar with his adventures in Sherwood Forest and we all fondly remember the films - preferably the Hollywood movie starring Kevin Costner, as opposed to that camp British effort that had Keith Chegwin in it (you're fantasising again, aren't you? - Ed.). Well, fans of the fable can now take part in their own legendary adventures, in this tactical strategy game from Spellbound.

Giving players the unique chance to pick up a trusty bow and arrow and take on the role of the legendary nobleman, Robin Hood: The Legend of Sherwood sees them join forces with Little John and his Merry Men, as the battle for control of the King's throne ensues.

The game features all the famous characters depicted with incredible accuracy, from Little John's jubilant laugh to Maid Marian's fragrant loveliness. All the famous locations such as Sherwood Forest and Nottingham Castle are recreated with a detailed realism that brings the legend to life. Emphasis has been placed on the atmosphere of each of the featured environments, immersing Robin and the rest in nicely rendered and picturesque locales.

A total of 40 missions remain to be undertaken, each one based on either Robbery and Infiltration, Castle Attack, or Ambush. An intuitive interface allows for the problem-free control of movements and battles with the mouse, whilst icons show the characters' moods throughout the game. To assist with tactical measures, detection cones determine the enemy's field of vision a la Metal Gear Solid.

The legend of Robin Hood has been told many times, through video games as well as books and films. This latest effort manages to house the depth that such a tale requires, delivering an involving experience within the classic tale.
