Summary

Platform-based adventures full of weird characters are legion in videogames. Bringing these two elements together usually means that whatever game is on offer is usually worth a look. March 2003 witnesses the release of Doctor Muto on Game Boy Advance, a platform-based adventure full of weird characters, no less!

Sporting the obligatory white lab coat and the requisite shock of white hair, Dr Muto has a bit of a problem in that he's destroyed his planet, and all that's left, conveniently enough, is his laboratory. Lucky him. Assuming the role of the mad scientist, your job is to put right what's gone so terribly wrong, and the way to do this is to plunder the resources of the surrounding planets. Actually, what you have to do is extract DNA from the different creatures found on those planets, by virtue of the oddly named Splizz Gun. Using the harvested DNA to morph into a weird version of a man/monkey or a cross between a lab technician and an alien spider will help you explore and conquer a huge number of worlds and their hostile inhabitants.

Doctor Muto on the GBA is nothing more than an adventure platformer, but what makes this particular game such a treat for handheld gamers is its genuinely quirky sense of humour and amusing gameplay. It's no po-faced role-player - nor is it some deadly serious blast-'em-up designed to give you the portable willies. No, Doctor Muto's prescription is good, clean fun, if a little idiosyncratic. Take as often as possible.
