Summary

Gotham’s Conflict: Desert Storm made a big impact when it was released in September 2002, attracting considerable media attention due to its content. Nevertheless, it was a solid first-person affair, and now there’s a sequel, imaginatively titled Conflict: Desert Storm II.

Again set in the hostile environment of the Gulf War, Desert Storm II takes players a further 300 kilometers behind enemy lines in a squad-based game in which players are charged with tackling some of the most critical missions of the conflict. Your objective is to eliminate chemical warfare and rid Kuwait of the elite Republican Guard.

Undoubtedly more challenging than the original, your campaign is pivotal to the events of the war. Your journey takes you through deadly Kuwait in which you must strategically command a squad of fellow troops through ten extensive missions before reaching the game’s climax.

As a game, Desert Storm II is smart and sophisticated, boasting convincing AI that affords human-like behaviour from both your allies and foes. Much of your adventure is spent sneaking around, and it’s here that you’ll be able to appreciate just how clever this game is.

On the other hand, full-on shootouts are less tasking, but by no means easy. Armed to the teeth, you and your squad must do your best to avoid being shot by the myriad troops of the Republican Guard. Gameplay is well balanced between these two different playing styles, and keeps the player motivated to continue throughout the adventure.

Another hit for SCi, Desert Storm II places itself alongside Rainbow Six and SWAT in the strategy-shooter hall of fame.
