Summary
In what is probably best described as Power Stone for 100-foot B-movie monsters, SCE's War of the Monsters sets players down in a virtual city where they must fight monster to monster, amidst skyscrapers, heavy traffic and military onslaughts. Now, that sounds like it could be fun.
Controlling a host of the biggest, most brutal monsters ever seen, including an oversized angry gorilla, monstrous insect and an armoured robot literally as big as a skyscraper, players must fight in knuckle-wrenching, multi-monster battles in fully destructible 3D environments in an attempt to knock the opposition senseless.
Boasting some of the most interactive environments seen in a while, War of the Monsters allows players to impale rival monsters with metal pylons, use taxicabs to test throwing aim, and swing steel girders to beat the enemy into submission. You can also pick up your opponent and literally throw him through a skyscraper in the distance, then crash through the debris to continue the battle.
In true beat-em-up style, combos and special attacks also play a significant role, with players able to combine several different attacks or execute a special "rage" skill, unleashing heavy damage on the opponent. Players can even trigger environmental attacks such as tidal waves and earthquakes for added effect.
Game modes include Adventure, Endurance, Free-for-all, and Elimination, and there are several mini-games to discover in the process. Up to two players can join in a battle, either competitively in a one-on-one battle, or co-operatively against two other formidable computer opponents. Whatever your preference, War of the Monsters is certainly one of the more interesting games we've seen this side of 2000.
