Summary

As you would expect, there's a plentiful supply of associated games accompanying the release of Disney's latest animated adventure Treasure Planet. Unusually this time, they're not all ports of the same game, churned out on to every conceivable gaming platform. Subsequently, the PC Treasure Planet game carries the subtitle 'Battle at Procyon' and is, in itself, an entirely original concept.

Placing more of an emphasis on the film's 'Solar Sail' vessels, Battle at Procyon sees players take control of these powered spaceships (that interestingly look just like normal, sea-faring ships) in a real-time, 3D action/strategy game. The point of the whole exercise is to defend the queen and empire from an assortment of marauding space pirates. Making matters a little worse is a mysterious new enemy, in possession of virtually indestructible 'Ironclad' ships.

In single player mode, players receive battle training, can tailor their ships and weapons or jump right into their missions, which are tied together by a story-driven narrative. Those of an impatient disposition will be pleased to learn that there's also a skirmish mode, which provides a host of instantaneous mini-battles. At the heart of the proceedings lies a simple and easy to master RTS interface, deigned primarily to be both accessible to new players, and to also offer more advanced features for experienced RTS fans.

A multiplayer mode is also on offer, allowing up to four players to create their own customised fleets. This involves determining the ships to be used, the characteristics of the crew, weapons and more. Following that, it's on to the Internet for some serious strategic battles.

Aimed at the 8+ market, Battle at Procyon should be accessible to a much wider audience than your average RTS game, pleasing both fans of the genre and fans of the film alike.
