Summary

FIFA Manager 08 (FM08) from EA Sports enters the market a matter of days after the daddy of football management games - Sega's Football Manager 2008 - went on sale and stormed to the top of the sales charts. There's tough competition however, in the shape of this officially licensed product, straight outta Chertsey! Not just another minor update with next year's number on the pack, there are plenty of new features to distinguish FM08.

This time around, there are more players, leagues and competitions, including the FIFA Confederations Cup, the FIFA Under 20s World Cup, and a selection of international club competitions. The huge database contains more than 75,000 historical results from various leagues. The new stadium editor enables you to construct unique stadia with ease, using an advanced editor and more than 400 elements. 3D game highlights come courtesy of EA's other major footy game (you know the one) and the game now includes 'real' scouting where you can uncover player stats using a realistic system before entering the transfer market. When you have your ideal squad of players, FM08 enables you to use the latest training methods and performance analysis to create tailored training regimes. And in the name of realism and authenticity, the developer charges the wannabe manager with maintaining dressing room harmony as players confront you with their demands. Be prepared for some awkward moments as pros demand time on the pitch, to be made team captain, or the number one choice for penalty taker. It's down to you as manager to placate, pacify and promise your players that you're there to look after their best interests.

FM08 contains all the data and features from the Football Manager 07 add-on, 'Extra Time' and many other inclusions, such as Simulation Mode to speed up the season, the setting up of youth camps in other countries, a Hall of Fame for top players and a 24 hours countdown news ticker as the transfer window comes to a close. FM08 has a lot to offer for those footy fanatics and control freaks who maybe want to withdraw from society and would rather do their role-playing on their own. Welcome to the world of sports-craft.
