Summary

Lux-Pain is an anime adventure game from Killaware that has been available in Japan since March 2008. One year on, Rising Star are bringing it to the DS owners of Europe. The game takes place in a universe where the inhabitants are plagued by a wave of mysteries. From simple things right up to murders that have no logical explanations. Our hero is Atsuki, and his parents become victims of this crime wave. So Atsuki gets Lux-Pain via a dangerous operation to his left arm. This enables him to fight "SILENT" the brain-worm which feeds on sorrow and loneliness and which is causing the crime wave. Atsuki is a member of FORT - the Force for Obliteration of the Rising Terrors.

This anime adventure game is pretty text heavy, but that helps unveil the detailed storyline to you. The text is combined with some beautiful imagery to make this a visually impressive game. You can use your stylus to uncover people's deepest and darkest thoughts - their "shinen". When a person becomes agitated, they they leave behind "shinen". You can then investigate this by rubbing with your stylus. By entering Sigma mode, you can wipe away at the touch screen until you discover little blobs that are supposed to be SILENT worms. Use your stylus on these worms and they eventually disappear leaving the memories and feelings of the person they belonged to. You can use these to piece the story together and rid the world of SILENT.

The gameplay can be quite confusing at first and there isn't much in the way of help from the game or the manual. You progress through the game by exploring Kisaragi City, but at first the game limits you to the areas that are appropriate to your search, rather than letting you wander freely, thus keeping you on track. With a little bit of persistence, Lux-Pain turns out to be an interesting and innovative adventure game.
