Summary

Zipper has had a lot of practice in creating online spec-op games. Now the creators of SOCOM have their sights set on a bigger goal – have as many players battling for clan supremacy as possible. The result is MAG, which in turn offers a refreshing bout of organised chaos on the PlayStation Network.

It starts off simple enough. Pick a side. There are three 'Private Military Corporations (or PMCs) that you can sign up for, each with their own style, approach and abilities. Then you simply build your personal soldier up from small-time rookie to Platoon Commander, in online skirmishes that can host up to 256 players.

Of course, in such a large-scale environment, communication is key to survival – as well as team work. Each player is assigned to one of several eight-player squads. These squads each have a Leader; someone who has ranked up enough in the game to earn the position will get this privilege. Squads then build up to form a 32-player Platoon, again with a Leader for each. Platoons make up a 128-player Army, which has a Commander General with the power to enact certain orders and last-minute abilities.

These battles are all par for the course in the Shadow War, a persistent battleground that changes landscape every time you log on. Once you sign up for a team, you should be ready to commit to its victory, 100 per cent! Now, where did we put that microphone?
