Summary

Colonies were all the rage in the 19th Century – it wasn't enough to live in our own country, so we had to explore other lands and 'acquire' them. Of course, in this time of great opportunity, almost every other country and his dog are thinking the exact same thing. Victoria II gives you that thrill of being a political diplomat, attempting to negotiate deals with neighbouring countries over land that you want to colonise.

Things don't always go to plan though, so you must prepare for war as well. You can't just engage in combat willy-nilly however – there are certain political procedures to adhere to first of all. With Victoria II, a new goal system allows you to add objectives linked to a peace deal.

You inform your opponents and allies about your intentions for colonisation of a particular area of land, and engage in peace talks to come to an arrangement. If the AI can see that you're a particularly strong adversary, they might let you have the land – alternatively, they might think you're getting too big for your boots and challenge your position.

Eight different types of government can be selected for you to take command of, with over 200 countries to play as. The era that you can play stretches from 1835 all the way to the start of World War II, and the experience will be vastly different depending on which time frame you wish to engage in colonisation talks.

Economies are an important part of the game, with over fifty different types of goods and production factories to use in order to sweeten your deals, and if that doesn't work there's always the Gunboat Diplomacy method, which lets you send a fleet towards the nearest port for a more persuasive approach.
