Summary

Games based upon wars and empires tend to be among the most strategic and complex games the industry has to offer. They generally live on the PC platform and are mostly menu-driven with continental maps to boot. And the same is true of Paradox's Crusader Kings, a hardcore strategy affair based on the popular Europa Universalis engine.

On this occasion, Crusader Kings focuses on the feudal kingdoms of medieval Europe during the period 1066 to 1453. The game maps are remarkably detailed and accurate, and cover all of Europe stretching to the Urals in the east and including parts of Persia, the Arabian Peninsula and the northern coast of Africa.

Here, players take on the role of the leader of a glorious dynasty. You must improve the wealth of your land and bustling treasure troves, build cathedrals and castles, and combat highway robber bands and defecting vassals. The wealthier you are, the more powerful you become. You'll even get the chance to introduce laws, set taxes and interact with hundreds of courtiers and nobles. But make your decisions wisely - historical events will most likely spawn from the actions of your monarch.

Crusader Kings is undoubtedly one of the most involving games in the genre that we've had the pleasure of seeing. It's not everybody's cup of tea, but those fond of this area of gaming will relish Paradox's epic.
