X Beyond the Frontier
Do not be deceived into thinking that simulations of the space variety are any different from the likes of the SimCity series. The fundamental aim of the game is the same – to use your management and financial skills to the best of your abilities. Among these so called ‘space simulators’ is the X series.
As well as managing the currency of the X Universe, Credits, you must also use unconventional methods to obtain and sell ships. Your master plan is to capture the best ship you can find, and get yourself back to your home planet – Earth. Each ship has its own unique handling abilities, so if the ship isn’t up to scratch, sell it.
X2: The Threat
X2: The Threat offers a massive, involving universe to explore, a realistic trading element, and also a fair bit of space combat for good measure.
The game sees you take on the role of a pilot from the X-Universe, the story beginning with the would-be hero and his companion bungling an attempt to steal a spaceship and soon finding himself on the way to enjoying a less than easy life on a prison-mining planet called Artur. Fortunately, the brilliantly named Ban Danna soon intervenes, offering you a last chance of redemption and with it, a job at TerraCorp, hauling freight.
X3 Reunion
Taking full advantage of Direct X 9 technology, X3 Reunion uses a brand new 3D engine to make a world where the factories and starships look just jaw-droppingly shiny and amazing. Once again, this X game uses Egosoft’s ‘Artificial Life’ system, which creates a living, breathing universe that evolves in real time, meaning that all your actions have an irrevocable effect on the destiny of the world you inhabit. It’s refreshing, as some might argue that this is a feature not even real life can offer. The feature also has greatly improved physics, as huge space stations drift in planetary orbit and smaller ships ping off into oblivion when swatted like flies.
X³: Terran Conflict
The culmination of the X trilogy, X³: Terran Conflict is the grand finale that takes us all the way back to Earth's own solar system.
Gamers can assume the role of a Terran military pilot or one of the many different characters in the X universe, and experience a multitude of stories in the largest X universe ever featured.
It's safe to say that's plenty of X content!
