Summary

Steel Battalion: Heavy Armor comes from the strange gaming minds of the people at From Software. This team first brought the world the Armored Core games in the 1990s. Steel Battalion: Heavy Armor of that thinking is a logical extension that uses tanks while also being the third in the Steel Battalion series.

The previous games in the series included the online-only, Line of Contact, which like the first game in the series required the player to own the cock-pit peripheral (with its ejector pad). This time the game makes use of the Xbox Kinect – in fact it requires the purchaser to own a Kinect to play. That said, it also uses the more old fashioned 360 controller as well, for movement and combat.

The game is set in 2082, where computers have been expunged from existence and gamers must make use of very basic weapons. This includes the “Vertical Tank” or “VT”.

A VT may lack computer aided weaponry and piloting systems, but it does have crew, and the best crews win.

The player uses Kinect when they are inside the cockpit - for example to make use of the in-tank periscope or even to start the tank's progress. As the cockpit is where the majority of the action occurs, there is in fact a great deal of stress put on the use of the Kinect peripheral both for action and some elements of speech.

At heart Steel Battalion: Heavy Armor is a mech combat game and this means that the gamer must get used to handling the both the weight and feel of large and heavily armoured combat vehicles in a wide variety of terrains and conditions.
