Summary

If there's one thing that's been done to death in shoot-'em-ups, it's World War II's Western Front. Gamers know it back to front. Developer Tripwire has, in its quest to give us something a bit different, strode into fresher territory. In Red Orchestra 2 the company tackled the Eastern European theater. With this standalone expansion, Rising Storm, the developer has moved even further afield to tackle the neglected Pacific conflict zone.

The result is a sophisticated shooter aimed squarely at the hardcore. For example, if you're firing over a distance you'll need to make adjustments for bullet drop. It's not sufficient to have an enemy in your crosshairs – you need to make sure you've judged distances correctly.

As was the case in real life, Japanese soldiers are at a technological disadvantage in Rising Storm. However, while American troops can hose enemies with more bullets (or the trusty flamethrower), Japanese soldiers can do things like bury grenades, carry mobile mortars and use banzai attacks.

Rising Storm features a robust multiplayer mode. Your number of deaths isn't tracked, encouraging everyone to get stuck in instead of hanging back to keep an eye on kill/death ratios. Team and squad leaders are extra important, as squad leaders paint targets so that team leaders can call in artillery strikes to light them up.

If you're looking for a tough shooter that doesn't just follow the trends of glossier console games, Rising Storm has you covered.
