Summary

Platinum Studios - the developer behind the Bayonetta series - had something of a hit working with Activision on Transformers Devastation, delivering a licensed game that broke the mould of humdrum, forgettable cash-ins. Now, the developer/publisher team is looking to bring that same magic to the heroes in a half shell with Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutants in Manhattan.

Sticking to Platinum's strengths, the game is an action title with plenty of beat-'em-up fun. Players protect the Big Apple from mutants, aliens and, of course, the nefarious Foot Clan across a single-player campaign and online four-player co-op.

Combat is Platinum Games' signature blend of speedy combat featuring a mix of light and heavy moves. There's a bit of a taste of MMO play in the mix, with each character having a special ability that feeds into the mix. Winning the day is about knowing which turtle to deploy with which move at which moment.

The icing on the cake is rich, cel-shaded art that plays to the Turtles' comic book roots that suits Leonardo, Donatello, Michaelangelo and Raphael down to the ground. Throw in a story written by one of the creators behind IDW's ongoing Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles series, Tom Waltz, and you've got a game sure to appeal to fans new and old.
